Convert modern DOCX files to a .doc that opens in Word, WordPad and LibreOffice - free, and entirely in your browser. Read the note below on what “.doc” means here.
About the .doc file you get. It is written as Rich Text Format with a.doc extension. Word, WordPad, LibreOffice, Pages and Google Docs all open it normally. It is not the 1997 binary DOC format, so a system that inspects the format itself rather than the file name will see RTF. Writing true binary DOC needs a full Word engine, which cannot run in a browser.
DOCX is the XML-based format Word has produced since 2007. DOC is the binary format Word used up to 2003. Converting between them is not symmetrical: reading DOC is a matter of parsing a documented structure, but writing it means reproducing a stylesheet, formatted-property bin tables and a section table exactly as Word expects - work that requires the Word layout engine itself.
So this tool writes Rich Text Format instead, named .doc. That is the honest substitute: RTF is Microsoft’s own interchange format, every word processor reads it, and Word opens the result without complaint. What it will not do is satisfy a system that requires genuine binary DOC - an old document-management system, say, that sniffs the file header.
What carries over: body text, paragraph breaks and tabs, with accented and non-English characters encoded as Unicode escapes. What does not: images, tables, fonts, sizes and colours.
If you specifically need a true binary DOC, open the file in Word or LibreOffice and choose Save As → Word 97-2003 Document. If you just need something an older Word can open, this tool is enough.
