Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about marketplace fees and seller profit
How is my profit calculated?
Profit = Settlement amount − your costs (− net GST payable, if enabled). The settlement amount is your selling price minus all marketplace deductions: referral/commission fee, payment or collection fee, closing/fixed fee, shipping fee, and GST charged on those fees.
Are the fee templates accurate?
Templates use typical published rates as starting defaults, but marketplaces revise fees often and rates vary by category, price band, weight, and shipping zone. Every field is editable — check your seller dashboard's fee calculator or rate card and adjust the numbers for an exact result.
What is a good profit margin for online selling?
Most experienced sellers target a net margin of 15–25% after all fees, and an ROI of at least 50–100% on product cost. Below 10% margin, returns (RTO), damaged goods and ad spend can easily wipe out your profit.
How does GST affect my profit as an Indian seller?
Your selling price includes GST that you must remit to the government (output tax). However, the 18% GST that marketplaces charge on their fees is claimable as input tax credit (ITC), which reduces your net GST liability. Enable the 'Include product GST' option to see this effect.
Does the calculator account for returns (RTO)?
Not directly — returns vary widely by category and platform. A practical approach is to add your average per-order return cost to the 'Advertising & other costs' field, e.g. if 10% of orders return at ₹100 loss each, add ₹10 per order.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no signup. All calculations run in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server.
Calculate Your Real Profit on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho & More
A product that looks profitable on paper can quietly lose money once every marketplace fee is deducted. Between referral commissions, closing fees, collection fees, shipping charges and GST on fees, marketplaces routinely take 25–40% of your selling price. This free online seller profit calculator shows exactly where your money goes and what actually lands in your bank account.
Fees Every Online Seller Should Know
- Referral / commission fee: A percentage of the selling price, varying by category — from ~2% on some categories up to 20%+ on fashion.
- Closing / fixed fee: A flat per-order fee, usually tiered by price band.
- Shipping / weight handling fee: Based on weight, dimensions and delivery zone (local, zonal, national).
- Payment / collection fee: Charged on the order value for collecting payment (typically ~2% on Flipkart; 2.9% + $0.30 on Shopify Payments).
- GST on fees (India): Marketplaces add 18% GST on all their fees — claimable as input tax credit if you are GST-registered.
Pricing for Profit, Not Just Sales
Use the platform comparison table to see which marketplace leaves you the highest margin at a given price point. Then work backwards: if you need a 20% net margin, increase your selling price until the calculator shows it — or negotiate your product cost down. Indian sellers should also enable the GST option to account for output tax and input tax credit, and can use our free GST Rate Finder to confirm their product's GST rate and GST Tool for Online Sellers to prepare GSTR-1 returns from marketplace reports.
