Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about GST rates and HSN codes

What are the current GST rate slabs in India?

After the GST reform effective 22 September 2025, India has a simplified two-slab structure: 5% (merit rate) and 18% (standard rate), plus 0% for essentials and a 40% special rate for luxury and sin goods. Gold and silver remain at 3%, and rough diamonds at 0.25%.

How do I find the GST rate for my product?

Type the product name (e.g. "mobile phone", "shampoo", "cement") or its HSN code into the search box above. The tool instantly shows the applicable GST rate, HSN code, and category.

What is an HSN code?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is an internationally standardised system of codes used to classify goods. Under GST, businesses must mention HSN codes on invoices β€” 4 digits for turnover up to β‚Ή5 crore and 6 digits above that.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

For sales within a state, GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state) β€” e.g. an 18% rate becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For inter-state sales, the full rate is charged as IGST.

Is this GST rate finder free?

Yes, completely free with no signup. Everything runs in your browser β€” no data is sent to any server.

Are these rates official?

Rates are compiled from CBIC notifications following the 56th GST Council decisions (GST 2.0). Rates change from time to time β€” always verify against cbic-gst.gov.in before filing returns or issuing invoices.

Find GST Rates & HSN Codes for Any Product in India

Whether you are an online seller, a shopkeeper, an accountant, or just a curious consumer, knowing the correct GST rate for a product is essential. Charging the wrong rate leads to notices, mismatched returns, and penalties. Our free GST rate finder lets you look up the rate and HSN code for 180+ common goods and services in seconds.

The New GST Slab Structure (Effective 22 September 2025)

The 56th GST Council meeting approved the biggest overhaul since GST launched in 2017. The old four-slab system (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) was replaced with a simpler structure:

  • 0% (Nil): Essentials like milk, paneer, Indian breads, notebooks, life-saving drugs, and individual life & health insurance.
  • 5% (Merit rate): Most daily-use items β€” packaged foods, personal care products, medicines, small appliances of daily need, apparel and footwear priced up to β‚Ή2,500.
  • 18% (Standard rate): The default rate for most goods and services β€” electronics, cement, small cars, telecom, and financial services.
  • 40% (Special rate): A demerit rate for luxury and sin goods β€” aerated drinks, pan masala, large cars and SUVs, premium motorcycles, and online money gaming.

Special rates continue for gold and silver (3%) and rough diamonds (0.25%).

Why HSN Codes Matter for GST Filing

Every GST invoice must carry the correct HSN code. Businesses with turnover up to β‚Ή5 crore must use 4-digit codes, while larger businesses need 6-digit codes. The HSN code you use also drives the HSN summary (Table 12) of your GSTR-1 return. If you sell on Amazon, Flipkart, or Meesho, pair this rate finder with our free GST Tool for Online Sellers to convert your marketplace reports into GSTR-1 Excel and JSON files.
