DWG to DXF Converter
DWG and DXF are both Autodesk formats, but DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is open and text-based, so it opens in almost any CAD application — including free tools like QCAD, LibreCAD and FreeCAD. Converting DWG to DXF is the easiest, most reliable CAD conversion because the two formats share the same geometry model; it is essentially lossless.
DWG is AutoCAD's compact proprietary binary format — fast and small, but needs AutoCAD or a compatible reader.
DXF is the open, documented exchange version of the same data. Larger than DWG, but readable by nearly every 2D/3D CAD program.
How to Convert DWG to DXF
Open the DWG
Open your file in AutoCAD, or in a free tool such as LibreCAD, QCAD or the free ODA File Converter.
Save As DXF
Choose Save As → DXF and pick a DXF version. Newer versions keep more features; older versions maximise compatibility with legacy software.
Confirm in the target app
Open the DXF in your destination program to confirm layers, blocks and dimensions came across correctly.
DWG to DXF — FAQ
Is DWG to DXF lossless?
Practically yes. DWG and DXF represent the same geometry, so a straight conversion preserves lines, layers, blocks and dimensions. Very new DWG-only features are the rare exception.
What free tool converts DWG to DXF?
The free ODA File Converter (by the Open Design Alliance) batch-converts DWG⇄DXF, and LibreCAD/QCAD can save DXF directly.
Which DXF version should I choose?
If the destination software is modern, use a recent DXF version. For older or unknown software, an older version (e.g. R12/2000) is the safest for compatibility.
Why convert DWG to DXF at all?
DXF is open and widely supported, so it's the best way to move drawings into software that can't read native DWG — including many free and cross-platform CAD apps.
